thoughts on the green knight (2021)

i have a lot of Thoughts that i was originally going to post to my main but this is what the sideblog is for. tl;dr under the cut

tl:dr: i think overall the themes were well-represented, but i couldn't figure out WHY they changed the things they changed - some examples i was looking for were things like making it more accessible to a modern audience, or fitting into the allotted time, but those weren't really there. it was largely incomprehensible to anyone who doesn't have intimate knowledge of the poem; i think that inaccessibility like that is a MAJOR flaw in a movie (again at the bottom) things i am docking points for, in chronological order:

christmas day: this isn't like important to the plot but it's super annoying to me personally when people think the date for the beheading is christmas day when it's actually new year's day. we've all heard 12 days of christmas it's not that big of a stretch to figure out they're still celebrating it on new year's

morgan being gawain's mother: this is a big one! arthuriana has so few female characters, and erasing morgause removes a major one and messes up a lot of stuff by moving her to the beginning. more on this later.

sub-bullet of that actually: why is arthur so old when morgan is not. what is UP with that

other sub-bullet of morgan in the beginning: her giving gawain the belt and it getting taken by the kids who mugged him. i can see it representing loss of innocence and his mother not being able to protect him anymore, but then its role switches to being a lot more symbolic later (to match its role in the poem) in a way that is confusing for the audience. more on this later as well.

re: the kids mugging him in the forest: i GUESS this symbolizes loss of innocence? maybe? but it just makes gawain look like an idiot and lengthens this part of the movie so i'm docking points.

the fox: i literally do not get the point of this from a metaphorical standpoint. literally as his guide it made sense up until the end. trying to convince him NOT to go to the chapel seemed...counterpoint to its motives up until then?

the exchanging of winnings: this is a big one because it's so crucial to the poem and like. how do you mess it up this bad while still including it. first of all lady bertilak gave him the book before the exchange was even called so to the audience it looks ridiculous. and don't even get me started on the weird camera-esque portrait!

then like. she gives him the belt on the FIRST DAY. completely fucking up the timeline here. why would you do that.

and THEN she doesn't even kiss him! she fucks gawain completely without kissing him,, so when lord bertilak kisses him it makes literally no sense from an audience standpoint. if you're gonna make it an exchange of winnings it should be an even exchange so it. makes sense? (this is where 'it makes no sense! compels me though.' applies.)

the belt fucking scene: would've been fine except lady bertilak said 'you're no knight.' this (clearly modern) interpretation of the text wasn't there at all. in the poem, the problem wasn't gawain kissing her; it was him failing to give all the winnings to lord bertilak. /that/ is what made him fail. this is actually my biggest beef with the movie's adaptation for a modern audience.

the old woman in the bertilak's castle: SO stupid. just there to make gawain (and the audience) uncomfortable. since morgan has been removed piecemeal and dropped at camelot, this old woman is useless and confusing, especially without the juxtaposition between the poet's description of her and their description of lady bertilak.

the end of the beheading game: first of all, gawain getting there early is dumb and renders the knight's three swings narratively useless

the dream sequence: narratively does a decent amount to contextualize the meaning of the green belt, but ONLY if you know where it's going. if you know that the belt is supposed to symbolize gawain's failure to complete the quest and hold his oath, it makes sense! otherwise it just seems like a belt he had sex for one time and now refuses to take off. confusing.

also i hate it as a device. wasn't good when twilight did it, isn't good here. (i don't actually remember any other movies that did this off the top of my head)

the actual end: terrible! you cut out like, the most important part of the poem: when the green knight actually explains everything, including who he is, the fact that morgan's involved and her motivations, the point of the exchange of winnings. this is further confused by the movie green knight stroking gawain's face and calling him 'his brave knight.' if you don't know that that's the guy who kissed him ten minutes ago you're even more confused now

not to mention we don't see if the green knight actually decapitates him. like i get that you're going for ambiguity here but. why.

speaking of ambiguity, it's nearly impossible to decode what's going on if you don't know the poem really well. i touched on this in the other points but. i want to call it out explicitly

things that i liked but are not worth any points:

this being Gawain's Big Break: i actually thought this fit VERY well thematically, however there were too many scenes where he was like. Suddenly Famous and Well-Regarded. the worst was at the bertilaks' castle, because in the poem they're not supposed to know about the beheading game. also this takes away the Essential Medieval Romance Trope of the knight attempting to hide their identity

gawain being just a lil bit slutty: not executed well. see the belt thing above.

the giants. they were cool but served no purpose. also why were they all hairless with boobs what was that about

the fact that gawain and lord bertilak did in fact kiss: i so desperately want to give points for this but it felt again like our modern view of sexuality speaking over the text. gawain should have given kisses freely and as part of the exchange of winnings but it felt like he Couldn't do that as the hero which was disappointing. it felt like a Big Deal when it isn't presented as such in the text.

things i am bestowing points for:

the winifred scene: unhinged and unnecessary subplot of helping a random maiden in the woods COMPLETE with a barb about how you can't ask for anything in return? talented. brilliant. incredible. amazing. showstopping. spectacular. i have no complaints about this addition.

the pronunciation of gawain's name: in college i had a professor who told us she pronounced it ga-wen when it was without the e and guh-wayne when it had the e. so props for matching that i guess

gawain's yellow cloak. i want one.

the camera shots were beautiful

the dialogue felt SO good. when it started in verse i was super excited and. throughout it really wasn't distracting? very good

costumes were not accurate even with my limited knowledge but they slapped so i don't care

I ALMOST FORGOT THE ACTING which shows how good it was. very very

Second part of the Grocery Shop series!

no summary this time. I guess you'll just have to find out!

'He nuzzles his head into your neck a little further, and you giggle. This all seems so familiar. It seems so right. This moment with her causes him to feel like he's known her forever. It's a pleasant, warm feeling. Is this what people mean when they say a person can feel like home?'

Your encounter with Corpse has already been a month ago. You two exchanged names and numbers in the park. At first, you were a little taken aback by the name, but you'd grown to love it.

Corpse was scared that you would think he was a murderer or a creep and never talk to him again when he had given you his name. After how much you helped him, it would be awful if you would neglect him now.

Ever since that day, you have barely left his mind. During streams, his friends would often joke around because he kept zoning out.

That feeling he felt when you held him in your arms was indescribable. He felt safe and comforted, which he hadn't felt in a long time. When he got home after you met, he plopped down on his couch with the biggest smile on his face.

The familiar tune of your ringtone echoes through your bedroom as you lay in your soft bed. You get excited, knowing that it's Corpse based on the song playing.

You pick up and greet him, excitement clear in your voice. "Hey, Bubs!" He always pretends like he hates the nickname, but in reality, he loves it. It's adorable, and you always manage to make him feel shy whenever you call him that.

Just to get you back, he always responds with something flirty, like the iconic "Whaddup baby?" getting you flustered every time. This time he chooses to go for "'Sup babe?" he grins to himself as he says it and twirls around in a circle in his gaming chair.

"Whatcha doing?" you respond, making the o longer.

"Just calling a dork at the moment. You?" You can hear the humor in his voice as you imagine him smirking on the other side of the line. Your gut feeling is correct, as he is smirking, but you don't know that.

An offended look spreads over your face, followed by a pout. You send him a picture of your expressions right now, and you can hear him laugh into his phone. "I am NOT cute! And I'm not a dork! How dare you. I happen to be calling an idiot who clearly doesn't know how to treat a woman." You try to stifle your laughter and stay in character but fail completely as you crack up.

Both of your laughter turned into giggles and now calmed down. You're quiet for a minute, just appreciating the presence of each other. Even over the phone, Corpse feels safe. As long as he's talking to you, he believes nothing can hurt him. You get the same feeling and hope that it never goes away. You wish you could go see him, but with his anxiety, you know you probably can't.

Corpse had explained to you why his mask only reveals a small part of his face, and you respect his wishes to remain faceless completely. He was surprised, assuming you would want to know the face of someone you had been calling almost every day. Every time he had revealed something about himself to what he thought you would bail, you stayed. The anti-social man wasn't used to this kind of acceptance. Especially since you are always so quick to assure him that you aren't going anywhere.

"Hey, Y/N, are you lying in bed right now?" a deep voice spoke up, breaking the silence.

"Yeah. I have been the entire day dude. You know me."

"Fuck, Y/N! Get up and go drink some water right now!" Corpse demands

You sigh, exaggerating it to make sure Corpse hears you. He laughs and just replies with a "chop, chop."

You stretch for a bit after you've slowly gotten up and walk towards the kitchen with your phone in your hand. "Alexa, connect my phone to the speakers!" You yell.

Alexa replies, and right after, you can hear Corpse in the whole house. "Yo, Corpsie! I can hear you literally everywhere now! It's very, very loud."

He chuckles, sending vibrations through your body. It may be a little too loud...

You grab a cup of water and gulp it down, then filling it up again. "Hey, bubs?"

The low voice rings through your ears as he mutters "yeah" in entertainment. "Uhm, how about- wait, do you have access to your roof?"

"Yeah, I do. Why?" he drags out the y in a questioning tone, wondering what you're up to this time. "Go grab yourself some snacks and a warm blanket! We're gonna go stargazing!"

You rummage through the cabinets in the kitchen in search of food. After a few minutes, you've managed to gather a chocolate bar, some chocolate-chip cookies, and an apple. "Corpseeeee" You whine while grabbing a thermos flask.

"Yes, darling, what is it?" he sarcastically asks as he's filling up a bottle of water.

"what foods did you get?" You ask as innocently as you can. Corpse sighs, already being done with your bullshit, but also loving every second of it. He looks at his counter, taking in all the food in front of him. "I got... a bag of M&Ms, a Mars bar, and some popcorn. I also got myself a bottle of water."

"Oh yeah, I'm filling up a thermos flask with hot chocolate as we speak!"

Your tongue slightly slips out of your mouth as you focus on filling the can. When you finally get it, without spilling anything, you cheer in victory. "Not a dork, you said?" Corpse laughs. "Oh, shut it! You know as much as I do how clumsy I am. But I managed to pour all of the hot chocolate into the flask without spilling anything or burning myself!" you proudly say.

And you really are proud of yourself! Yesterday you somehow managed to hurt yourself while grabbing the TV remote. And don't get me started on walking. Words can literally not describe how fucking awful you are at walking. Just normal walking seems to be the hardest thing in the world sometimes.

"You ready to go to the roof, bubs?" you ask your friend.

"Hold on, let me just get a blanket." you hear the stairs thumping as Corpse runs away.

"Alright, then. Seems like it's just you and me now, buddy!" you say to your cat, Nina. You hear the stairs again, and a second later, Corpse is back on the phone, though he is out of breath.

"Well then, Y/N. Let's go stargazing!"

Reblog Etiquette (and ships)

At this point, we all know about “reblog karma” and “reblogging from source.” Though, I say that...and am questioning it. You should fucking know this by now, but in the event you don’t, let me define that shit for you.

Reblog Karma: the RPC’s oldest attempt at keeping people from clogging notifications and using others as meme resources. Essentially, don’t reblog a meme from a mutual unless you are sending them something from that meme first. Not all blogs practice it, or practice it the same way, please see their rules.

Reblogging from Source: another effort to stop being used as a meme/aesthetics resource. Many RPers would like you to reblog quotes, aesthetics, and memes from their source (original post location or the meme/aesthetics/quotes resource blog they got it from), even if you are sending them a meme. This is especially applicable when not interacting with the RPer.

Okay, that’s out of the way.

There is more to Reblog Etiquette than this!

And, when that etiquette is nonexistent, it almost always deals with a RPer’s ship. Mentioning ship partners and/or tagging ships on a reblog from another RPer, not removing that RPer’s mentions or tags, and even dropping a mention or outright RPing in the comments of another RPer’s reblog.

Don’t reblog from another mun and tag your ship or mention (@) your ship partner(s).

Don’t reblog a post with someone else’s mention still stuck to it.

Don’t reblog a post and leave the previous mun’s tags still in the tags.

Don’t go into the comments on someone’s post and mention your ship partner(s).

Don’t roleplay in the comments of someone else’s post.

None of this is alright, I have no idea what would make anyone think this is appropriate reblog etiquette, but it very much is not. It’s incredibly rude and lazy. Because I know that many people have similar ship aesthetics and so on, I’m not saying you shouldn’t reblog something for your own ships that a mutual has for theirs. (That’s a whole other in depth conversation we’ll have later.)

I’m saying that this is how you should be going about it:

Reblog from the source.

-What if there is no source because it’s deactivated, or there is another reason why I can’t access it?

Go into the post’s notes. At some point, damn near every post that could be used as an aesthetic, quote, or prompt for a ship (and RP in general) has been reblogged by at least one source blog. Look for RP meme, aesthetic, help, and other resource blog urls. If you cannot find one of those, look for urls that are general resource-style blogs. Personal blogs reblog aesthetics etc. as well, and there are many such resource blogs out there. -If you’re uncomfortable reblogging from a personal, that’s tough shit; I hate to break it to you, but most of your resources came from personal blogs. Deal with it, or don’t reblog anything you can’t find filtered through a RP specific resource.

-- “But this takes time/effort lol I just want to use it for my ship.” Again, tough shit. Sometimes, it does take energy not to be rude and do the right the thing. In all honesty, it’s fairly rare that doing the right thing is effortless, even when it’s something as simple as RP. Grow up.

--- You went through the notes, but there’s no appropriate blog to reblog from, now what?

Just because it’s a rare occurrence doesn’t mean it’s impossible. I know this one isn’t, I’ve had it happen too! My choice was to not reblog it at all, I just sent the link to my ship partner privately instead. If you don’t have that kind of friendship, you really wanted it on the dash, or another reason, you are now left with one option, and you’re not going to like it. Message the mutual you want to reblog from. Politely, explain that you’d like to reblog the post for your ship, and ask if they’re comfortable with it. No guilting, begging, or general, weird ass rudeness. If they decline, accept it just as politely, thank them for their response. If they accept, thank them, and especially if this isn’t a mutual you interact with much, be sure you’re showing them continued support on the dash by reading and liking/commenting on their headcanon posts and other appropriate material. (You should be anyway.)

Remove any mentions present (@’s)

Seriously, this is incredibly rude! Yet, with the typical lack of self-reflection and awareness of others in the RPC here, I see it multiple times a day on my dash. Not just with RP-blog-to-RP-blog interaction either, I also see RPers reblogging from personals and leaving their mentions attached. (I see it the other way around too, but I’m not here to school personal blogs.) For all the excessive emphasis RPers put on appearance, you’d think they’d want to get rid of something that looks this sloppy, but no. Not if it takes one extra second of effort!

-I know that xkit’s editable reblogs tends to break whenever tumblr gives us a new, exciting, hideous, insulting, limitation, I mean update, but come the fuck on. It is also one of the quickest things to regain functionality, so, maybe you should save the reblog to drafts, be following xkit’s blog for updates, and edit it once there has been a patch. If it’s worth it to you, it’s worth a short wait. When it’s working, you can easily remove that mention with editable reblogs.

--If you’re going to use being mobile as an excuse, or if you don’t want to wait on it/don’t use xkit, again, go to the source. And, also again, if that isn’t an option, you can find where it has been reblogged by an appropriate blog at some point in its history, sans mentions. Reblog from there.

Do not reblog someone else’s tags (#)

Some people have their xkit set up to reblog automatically with the previous poster’s tags. While that can be useful in some situations, I can think of, very literally, no situation this is appropriate for an RPer to use. If you have this set up on your personal/resource blog/wtfe and your RP blog is a sideblog (or you are using certain methods of having your browser open to two separate blog accounts where your xkit settings are transferring over), it’s up to you to delete the tags on these posts.

-It takes maybe one full second to click in the tag field and hit your delete button a few times to clear it. Do that. It’s never, ever, appropriate to keep someone’s ship, muse, verse, or other personalized tags attached to a reblog.

--If you are a personal blog reading this somehow, maybe you’re wanting to get into RP, please take note of this. This is one of the many reasons why most RPers will not interact with personals. We don’t like you reblogging an aesthetic post and keeping our tags on it.

In the case of both situations, not only is it rude and lazy, it’s fucking with someone else’s tags and privacy. Most RPers don’t want their content showing up in generally searchable tags, it’s one of the reasons that personalizing tags came about. Furthermore, if I’m on my dash and click a mutual’s custom tag for aesthetics, verses, ships, and so on, it’s now going to come up with instances of those tags on someone else’s blog as well.

Delete the fucking tags if they auto-populate. Don’t use someone else’s custom tags of your own volition either.

“Subverting” reblogs to mention in comments is a hard no, too

-So, you don’t want to reblog the post, but do want to @ your ship partner(s) in it? There’s no way to do that without being rude and strange. To be honest, this is even worse than just reblogging and tagging your ship.

I may not be the OP, but you came onto a post on my blog, one very likely tagged for my ships and/or having my ship partners mentioned on it, and commented on it mentioning your ship partner. It’s every bit as offensive and more so than someone reblogging from me and using it for a ship I’m not a part of. I don’t know what’s worse, when that other mun is a ship partner, casual mutual who doesn’t interact, or a writing partner but not ship partner. It’s all deeply fucked up. No one’s RP blog is here for your use like this!

--You’re also not subverting anything. I think the idea is to be polite or go unnoticed. People seem to lack a basic grasp on how tumblr works; you get notifications on reblogged posts you are not the OP of when someone comments on them just like you get a notif when someone likes it. The only way to genuinely be secretive about this would be to comment on it from the source or a resource blog. They will get the notification.

If you are commenting on, liking, or reblogging a post you see on the dash, the person having reblogged it, putting it there for you to encounter, will be notified of your interaction with it.

---What I’m saying, just in case it isn’t abundantly clear, for the third time now: you’re not being slick. Your mutuals will see that you weirdly @’ed someone in a comment on their reblog. They know.

----The appropriate behavior is to do just as advised in the above points: GO TO THE SOURCE. If no source exists, find an appropriate resource blog in the notes. You may then, and only then, give that mention in a comment.

Frankly, it’s still weird, and I would recommend you just reblog it from the source to interact with it. There is always the option of sending it to the intended party by way of tumblr’s messenger or linking the post in an off tumblr messenger like discord.

I say this because it hasn’t escaped my attention that the only time I have this issue on my own RP blog is when the imagery or text is fucking filthy. As in, Other Mun didn’t want something that sexual, kinky, violent, and so on to be posted to their own blog. You need to grow up if that’s your deal. Like writing smut or violence, if you need to do it in private only, you’re obviously not adult enough to handle the topic.

Keep your roleplay where it belongs; in your inbox and threads

-It’s not appropriate to start up RP in the comments of another RPer’s reblogged ship aesthetic. (Or anything else, this just happens to be the most common.) It’s incredibly odd and offensive to look in your notifications and see that a mutual and their ship partner are flirting, or outright fucking, in the comments of a post you reblogged for your ship.

It’s just as awkward feeling and offensive when someone reblogs the post and begins full-blown RP on it. It’s one thing when it’s a post originating from an RP resource blog, or when it’s kept to something like a mention and a short line that your writing partner can start their original post in inspiration of. But...

--You know how I said above that auto-copying tags thing is one of the reasons why RPers are iffy about personal blogs? Well, this is one of the reasons why personal blogs think RPers are exceedingly weird members of fandom that need to be excluded and devalued. It’s odd, especially if you’ve never encountered RP, to see someone reblogging your quote, moodboard, or other original post and RPing on it.

Listen, we all need to RP some crack and commentary sometimes, but it’s best left in the tags or put into a new post.

---Instead of RPing (not sorry, especially if it is smut) on that post, link the image to show in a new post, and go from there.

Please remember to be polite about artists, including photographers and gifers, when you do this! Tumblr automatically gives the source of imagery when you use a link to display the picture, that’s why I recommended doing that instead of saving, then re-uploading the image as though it is your own. If you’re going to do that, even if it’s just silliness going on, give mention of the artist, photographer’s blog/site, or gifer’s blog in the tag or below the image.

Tumblr is deeply unfriendly to artists of all sorts, don’t be fuel that. When you upload artwork for the sake of RP, again, even if it’s just crack, that’s literally violating what artists ask people not to do; you’re reposting their art without permission and credit.

I can’t describe how excited I am to do another summer event with you guys. It makes me so happy to know that last time was so well-received, I was asked to do another one this year! Now I’ll cut the selling talk, you’ve already read the top half of the post. There are just a few rules and details that I’d like to give.

From the top, the situation. The Smash Mansion is hosting its annual summertime trip. This year is special for its four fitting locations. The trip itself will be funded, but it is advised that your muse bring some of their own money to buy things like extra food, souvenirs, etc. Lodging will always be provided on the Daisy Cruiser, but if you desire to sleep in areas outside of the Cruiser’s cabins, such as the Delfino hotels or the Bubblaine Cabanas for example, that is allowed, as well. It will be your muse’s own money paying for the room, though!

The trip will be lasting eight days, from June 22nd to June 29th. We will be at each of the four locations for two days, both that location and the Daisy Cruiser being available for those two days. After that, the Daisy Cruiser will set sail once more and you will arrive at the new location. Of course, if you want to continue a thread even after the event has moved on or even completed, you are absolutely allowed to. All I ask is to not write for a location we have yet to arrive at. Again, finishing what has already been started is completely allowed!

And, like before, there is a Sideblog that I implore you folks to follow! It’ll give brief posts detailing the current location of the trip and list some recommended activities if you’re strapped for scenarios to write about.

The only requirement for this event is that you be in the Smash Bros. RPC or have a Super Smash Bros. verse. After all, this event is for the Smash Bros. RPC. You do not need to be mutuals with Cosmcther to take part, this is for everyone in the Smash RPC! But please respect other blogs’ rules if they are mutuals only.

Lastly, try to tag anything relating to this event with the tag #ssbsummer. It makes it easier to keep track of everything, and? I just love seeing what you guys are up to on these events and a dedicated tag makes that easier, too.

Determined: The impossible is possible. Moody believes anything can be accomplished with enough time, effort, and desire placed behind it. No corners are cut in his efforts at work, with Order missions, or ensuring the proper training of the newest recruits. One doesn’t take kindly to those who believe there is no hope in extinguishing the darkness in the world or making it a better place.

Loyal” Despite an outwardly gruff exterior, Alastor has a quick judge of character, latching quickly and deeply to those he believes he can trust. Too much of his thoughts lingering on ensuring his friends and his Aurors are safe, spending his own free time and sanity on completing

Closed off: An Auror is a dangerous job, fighting against the Dark Lord and his followers is a death sentence. The idea of being harmed or killed to leave those behind with any form of regret or sadness is something to be avoided. How can someone miss you if they never knew you in the first place? Such thoughts cause Alastor to second guess the personal relations in his life, even though he knows it’s only human to bond with others.

Paranoid: The scars of war came not only in the physical form. Already a nervous person from his youth, albeit a more healthy confliction, Alastor can never shake the feeling of being watched. Hunted. Overcautious in his personal life, not consuming foods or drink not produced in front of him to being wary of every person that appears to be moving in the same direction on the street.

character biography —

Life is dangerous Alastor, one always has to be on your toes! An afterthought of a full career for two Aurors, yet he never felt as if he was a burden. His mother had a large laugh and hummed while about the house, his father in love with her ever waking moment of the day. But they were gone often, understandably, but a child could never completely rid the selfish feeling of being left behind.

He is to be an Auror, like his parents and those before them. It’s in their blood and Alastor doesn’t shrink away from the challenge. Hogwarts is everything that was promised and more, access to so much information Moody hardly has the time to consume as much as he desires. The friends a welcomed bonus to the rigors of academia, bliss such slate nights spent rolling with laughter, the camaraderie in the Gryffindor common room after a Quidditch victory are memories he holds close and often to his chest. How young and foolish they all were.

Becoming an Auror is easy, a childhood of practice and words of those before him make the long hours and trials worth every body ache or jinxed limb. Yet the work is not as rewarding as one thought. Paperwork and a reason why things cannot be done with efficiency behind every corner. And it’s here when the reality of the depravity of wizardkind comes to light, how people treat one another purely based on their blood, yet the Ministry is slow and unable to protect their citizens while thumbs stand by idle. Of course he loves his job, loves the long hours and the small victories but Merlin! There is never enough done, a part of him lacking something in his life.

The Order of the Phoenix was something that was missing. Something that actually mattered behind and the paperwork and mundane arrests of criminals. The fire and passion in the group, borderline erotic. Yet it takes almost everything from them, the breaking of trust, the exhaustion. Alastor finds it difficult to believe it simply ends one day, refuses to believe it just ends like that. And it comes as a painful relief to know it isn’t...even if they have to do it all again so soon.

(( Of course would add Minerva details to this if accepted! Minerva/Moody is an awesome ship I haven’t thought about before! Just didn't want to be presumptuous before chatting/plotting with Minverva’s mun!

plot ideas —

+All of the Order missions! Even if they do not have a great deal of actions (ie fighting) in them I love setting up scenarios for characters to have to talk about the deeper issues that come with war! Especially when they are fighting against people they grew up with and spent years with at school. I think such great character growth comes when characters are

+Trials from the first war? I know politics are slow and corrupt especially in the HP universe, revisiting war criminals from Voldemort’s first rise and digging up otherwise buried emotions people are putting behind them. Alastor has an awful habit of being unable to forget the past.

+Auror training! Alastor is very eccentric as we know and his methods of teaching are very very unconventional. Constant vigilance would apply when Auror prospects are away from the Ministry as well! Moody would not be beyond kidnapping students from their beds and setting them off thinking they were captured by Death Eaters or some Dark creature only to be controlling the strings from behind the scenes. Of course he is also there when trainees might be struggling , offering helpful lessons or hope for the future.

+Butting heads with the younger generations. Alastor is one of the most stubborn men you will ever meet, but that doesn’t mean he’s against change. The youth are what affect the future and would love to see some younger characters butt heads with him! On the other end would love to see Moody fight with people inside the Ministry in the more law making role.

I’m keeping Alastor’s injuries concurrent from the canon at this point if that’s fine with the admins! One fake leg, magical eye and heavy scarring on his face.

will you tell us the fig thief story

It’s actually very mundane and it’s not much of a story beyond that I like figs a lot, but I’ll try to masterfully craft a narrative for you.

Before I continue, let me just say that good fresh figs are the fucking best and if you disagree then fuck you.

Around early last year (or the year before that? man idk) I sort of made a habit of going over to my friend JJ’s (also known as @void-sideblog-activate) house a lot, and since sitting around in other people’s houses can make me antsy a lot of the time, we would go on a lot of walks around his neighborhood. He also has a dog which we would sometimes take for walks. Or we’d just go together, or sometimes with 394. JJ really likes fruit, so one thing I’d do while we walked was point out fruit trees, like “hey that’s a plum tree, check back here in summer” or “those are loquats, you should consume some.” Apparently he didn’t know that loquats were edible until I told him and there’s jillions of them by his house and they’re apparently his new favorite fruit after having had them on my recommendation, so kudos to me. Also apparently my spellcheck doesn’t recognize the word “loquat.” Anyway, finding trees in his area that he could harvest from was just a thing I did. It was very kind of me, he’s super grateful.

So one time we were having our walk on this really super long and roundabout loop that pretty much consisted of us taking random turns with the idea that we’d make our way back to his home eventually. We saw some cats and wanted to follow them and eventually found our way to a park and walked through it to another street and followed that to a point at which I saw two fig trees. And I was like “holy shit J you have fig trees growing here this is amazing” and he was like “?? okay.” I spent like ten minutes being excited about that fact. I mean it was winter or early spring, so it’s not as if there was anything I could do with this information, but literally all year I kept bothering him about wanting to walk past those trees and looking to see if they were in season yet. These specific trees were not actually that close to his house or any nice walking routes because the way we got to them was dumb af, and JJ did not at all share my enthusiasm whatsoever, so we didn’t actually end up going back all that much. It turned out to be fine in the end though, because in the opposite different direction we ended up finding some much bigger much better much closer fig trees. All through summer we would walk by them as per my insistence, week after week, just waiting for them to ripen. There are two particularly great trees that were just huge and laden with low-hanging fruit that just seemed to be eternally hard and green. Of course the first tree to have any ripe fruit happened to be one of those in some dude’s yard that just barely had branches peeking over a really tall fence. We probably wouldn’t’ve even noticed it, but it was right by a publicly-accessible pineapple guava plant (another fruit which I hate and J likes, much like loquats). I thought there was no way we’d be able to reach it and began to lament my sorrows, but J, being considerably taller than me, decided to jump up and try to pick one. He succeeded and gave it to me and I was like “don’t you want to share?” and he was like “nah” which was a bit insulting to the concept of figs, that someone would ever not want to eat one.

A few weeks later, the actually accessible figs started to ripen, and JJ and I went and took as many as we could, we had like a dozen all at once, and J was like “holy shit these are actually amazing” (except that’s not a direct quote and he doesn’t really swear that often) and I was like “yeah obviously.” Figs. Figs are great. They’re sweet but not too sweet, they’re tender and fleshy but not messy, they’re soft but they also have lots of crunchy seeds. They’re great and again, if you disagree, fuck you. He spent like twenty minutes talking about how great they were as we walked back. He said he hadn’t expected them to be so good and I was like “wait what” and he told me that the only figs he’d had before in his life had been dried figs. Which explained his previous lack of enthusiasm because dried fruit sucks, especially dried figs, they’re the worst. When more began to ripen, JJ and I would take to walking to these trees like every day to just steal figs in a bowl of his. It became our thing. We brought a bunch back to his family and I sometimes intended to share mine with other people as well but they never survived that long. Sometimes I felt kinda bad for just taking fruit from his neighbors, but later in the season we started to see a bunch of fallen fruit in those yards and so I stopped feeling bad. We’d always pretend to be kind of subtle about our perfect crime however.

Anyway, J has now planted two fig trees in the middle of his grass and we are currently on the edge of our seats waiting for the season to be upon us once again. We also discovered a new tree that’s even better and more lush than the other two, but it happens to be growing on the side of a massive dropoff and all of the branches form a beautiful canopy right at arm-level, but entirely over a deep and narrow ditch at the bottom of which runs a municipal creek, and all of this is fenced off with a very climbable wire fence but with literally nowhere to stand on the other side. Something something fox and grapes.

Like I said, this is really super mundane all things considered, but it is also an aspect of my life which I am more than delighted to ramble about.

hello everybody! i have a little announcement to make!

so because i was unbelievably bored this past week and wanted to test my css and html knowledge, i took it upon myself to do the one thing no one asked for ever but i felt like we could all use:

i created a page/database, complete with categories and filters, of fanfiction by content creators on tumblr and other fic sites (ao3, wattpad, etc) to give you all easy reading access and a way to find a specific fic you’re in the mood for whenever you want

i’ll put all the info about it below the cut. i’m really excited for ya’ll to see!

using a basecode from cactusthemes here on tumblr (isaac’s themes and pages are gorgeous please check his work out if you’re ever in need of a new desktop theme) i coded and categorized a bunch of fics for your reading pleasure! i’ve included works from not only all my mutuals but many writers i think deserve more attention for their fics (which, let’s face it, are all of them).

i stayed up all night categorizing and filtering them for you as well, and i believe the filter system that is implemented is pretty straightforward. however i know it might get confusing, so i also made a help page for you which includes an explanation on the way the filters work and a legend for my icons!

First of all, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who applied or expressed interest to Holocene. We’ve had some really hard decisions to make over the last nine hours (!!! nine, that’s how much we loved these apps) and we really encourage anyone who didn’t get accepted this time to message us if you would like any feedback! We honestly liked something about every app, and we’re so grateful you thought we were worth your time and creative energy because it was our genuine pleasure to read all of your apps.

We’re so sorry about the wait —- we totally didn’t realise it would take this long, but some of these apps were super detailed and we wanted to be as thorough as possible with our decisions. We want to take this opportunity as well to remind you of our recent decision regarding tomorrow’s acceptance for reserves: as it may be our last open acceptances and applications before the group closes, given how many wonderful members we’ve accepted today, we’ve decided that anyone can apply at tomorrow’s applications, whether or not there was a reserve. We’re closing the submit two hours later than initially advertised as well, to try give a little more time, so the submit will be closing for the final time at 5PM PST / 8PM EST / 1AM GMT on Sunday, 16th September.
